This sure is fun.

I threw out my back yesterday playing basketball and am in a considerable amount of pain now. As a result of this, I probably won't be posting anything else today. I'm thinking about calling it a day and heading home to lay on the couch. Anway, I'll be back tommorow to talk about the Masters (fantastic to watch) as well as the Urban Meyer Lovefest aka the Orange and Blue Game whihc was attended by 58,500 people. Just an amazing turnout no matter how you slice it. Now where's my vicodin?

Mailbag question: I'm watching some of the Cavs-Magic game on NBATV, and man do the Cavs look bad. I was wondering how you feel about rooting for a team with a name as lame as the Magic. It's really hard to imagine a grizzled hard-core fan cheering "Let's go Magic!"

I've always had a bit of a problem with the Magic as the name. For two reasons: (1)There is nothing inspiring about the afforementioned phrase of "Let's Go Magic!" It just doesn't get you fired up like a "Let's Go Gators!" or some other animalistic name. I often refer to the Magic as "The Magi" or "The Magicians" which are not any better but at least supply a bit of comedic return on your fan chanting dollar. (2)This is really just my own idiosyncratic problem , but I've always disliked how you have to refer to the Magic in the singular, even though the team is clearly a plural. For example: When the Magic trade for somebody, ESPN's bottom line will read some thing like: "Orlando Magic acquires Doug Christie in a season killing trade" instead of "Orlando Magic acquire Doug Christie..." It's stupid but its always bothered me and I have never been able to figure out quite why it irks me so. Anyway, you take what you can get from a team that was originally headed up by a guy who made his fortune in Amway (Pat Williams) and are now run by a fucking former hockey player.

On another note: I believe the Magic are the only tema who makes the Cavs feel a little bit better about themselves. It's like both teams are locked in a "Mailing it In' Contest. Fucking pathetic.

"Magicians" is a good one.

I'm trying to imagine a Magic rivalry game with fans getting in a fight -- "MAGIC RULES! HEAT SUCKS!!!"

"SHUT UP! HEAT RULES!!! MAGIC SUCKS!!!!"

None of my top pro teams - Giants, Rangers, Mets - have particuarly ferocious nicknames, but there is a solid genericness about them that I enjoy. My 4th team, the Nets, is a little cheesy.
